What IS leadership?

There are SO many answers to this question.

For example, John Maxwell says “A leader is someone who knows the way, shows the way and goes the way.” In other words, the leader works out the way forward, points everyone in that direction and takes them there. I like this.

But I wanted a definition that was REALLY practical and gave help to new leaders in thinking about exactly what you have to DO to be a leader. So I came up with my own answer to the question and I talk about it here.

Leadership is: understanding what’s going on, figuring out what needs to happen, and working with people to make it happen.

In the context of leading a team, the need to be “working WITH people”, is really important. You can’t just be doing it all yourself. Because then you’re just doing. Not leading. You have to be working with people for it to be leadership.

What this definition does is give every leader three questions to ask themselves all the time.

What’s going on?

What do we need to do?

How are we going to do it? Together…

Ask yourself these questions regularly and you’ll be DOING leadership every day.

By the way… My Jetstart Workshop talks about this definition of leadership AND gives you a simple three-step process to start building your leadership impact. You can check it out at https://leadershipjetway.com/jetstart/

Where are you?

You might be in your first or second leadership role.

You might be thinking about applying for a position with more responsibility than you’ve had before.

You might have been doing leadership for ages but just started thinking about it as a topic in itself.

The word “leadership” is in your job description but no-one has really explained what it means or offered you any training or guidance on it.

You want to make an impact.

You want to get things done that make a difference.

You want to bring people with you. Not leave them confused on the sidelines or broken in your wake.

You’d like some ideas about leadership to think about and work on.

What it is. What it looks and feels like.

How to make positive changes while looking after your people.

If some or all of that is true…

Welcome. Leadership Jetway is for you.

It doesn’t matter if you have a handful of people reporting to you, or a hundred, or none at all. You can lead from where you are. I’d like to help.

So tell me… Why are you here? What are your frustrations and challenges? What has worked for you?

Leave me a comment. Let me know how I can help.

Changing things to make things better…

Leadership is about making changes. It’s about identifying opportunities to add value, or problems that need solving, and making changes to take advantage of the opportuntities or fix the problems. Change things. To make things better.

So how do you find the opportunities to add value?

Ask some questions. Ask yourself. Ask your colleagues. Ask your customers or the people in your organisation who rely on your work.

Where are your frustrations? What is the stuff that keeps getting in the way? Or the process that just doesn’t quite work right?

Where are your best customers? What are they valuing? What’s the most important thing you do for them and how well are you doing it right now?

Where are your competitors? What’s all the rage right now? Are you in on it? Should you get in on it? Or do something different to set yourself apart?

Somewhere in the answers to these questions you’ll find several things to change that would improve your corner of the world.

So pick one. Change stuff. Move it forward.

Then repeat.
